KAYA - Vampire Requiem Review

KAYA has been very eager to release “Vampire Requiem”. In this single, he has collaborated with artists HIZAKI (VERSAILLES) and Selia (Seileen.) With HIZAKI’s compositions mixing with KAYA’s, along with Selia’s familiar chorus, let’s see what these three elegant men have come up with.

Track list:

`1) Vampire Requiem
`2) Cursed Rose

The beginning of the song ‘Vampire Requiem’ has, what sounds like, church bells ringing. Then at about 0:06 the violins begin to play the melody. Suddenly the beat drops at 0:26. It wasn’t heavy, but you could feel the obvious change from the light violins to the airy electronic background as KAYA’s sweet voice is singing above. The violins change to harmony at this time--drifting behind the music playing and occasionally floating above the eletronic melody. During the chorus of the song you can hear Selia’s familiar voice replace the violins behind KAYA’s. HIZAKI’s touch, I assume, was the violins and the airiness to the song. Each of them acquired their own style to the song. This is a song that you could either dance to or simple relax with it playing gently in the background  it has the feel of trance music with a symphony. I know some people would criticize it, but in my personal opinion, it’s a wonderful piece--and a perfect fit for all three of them.

The beginning of ‘Cursed Rose’ has a nice beat at the very beginning with the piano playing. At 0:11 the song takes on a harder rock feel to it as the guitar, bass and drums play. Selia’s vocals are heard--floating as a nice harmony. KAYA enters--adding to the symphonic feel of the song. There isn’t an electronic beat to follow up with, however, but the ever lasting violins are heard at 2:35. The entire song seems to lean more toward HIZAKI’s rock style as it continues. Selia’s chorus is continuous through out the song until KAYA sings. Only at the repeated or group chorus to they sing together. In all honesty, this kind of thing would not be entirely expected from KAYA. It’s a surprise to hear this song and very pleasant. You can’t very well sleep along with it--not at all, but you can most definitely sit back and enjoy. Maybe even head bang a bit. (laughs) The song ends with a final beat and thus ends the single.

Now, as for KAYA fans, you would be getting your money’s worth if you bought this single. New to KAYA? This will most definitely deepen your love. Unsure about him? This single is a good way to make your final decision on whether you like him or not. Both songs are very refreshing and to hear "Cursed Rose" may surprise you and put a smile on your face as it did for me. I’m not counting out the main song ‘Vampire Requiem’, though! It was definitely worth looking forward to.
